Posted on Updated: Feb 22, Categories Psychology. By: Author Pamela Li. In psychology, intrinsic motivation is known as the best type of motivation. Read on to learn about what it is, why it is the best type, and how to use this knowledge to motivate someone or yourself!

To understand intrinsic motivation, we first have to understand what exactly it means for something to be intrinsic. Intrinsic motivation is an inner drive that propels a person to pursue an activity, not for external rewards, but because the action itself is enjoyable. In other words, a person is motivated by the fun, challenge or satisfaction involved with an activity, not for an outside outcome, pressure or reward.

And, as you may have predicted, extrinsic motivation refers to doing an activity to attain some separable outcome, such as earning a reward or avoiding punishment. Together, intrinsic and extrinsic motivations make up the underlying reasons, attitudes, and goals that give rise to human behavior.

If a student is highly motivated to study out of interest and curiosity in the subject, or because the student simply enjoys learning, then the action is based upon intrinsic motivation. If, however, a student studies because they want to get the approval of their parents or avoid getting a bad grade, then the action is based on extrinsic motivation. These feelings of enjoyment, happiness or satisfaction are what psychologists called intrinsic rewards sometimes called inner or internal rewards.

Studies have found that one of the most significant motivating factors is the feeling of competence. For example, when you complete a difficult task or master a new skill successfully, you feel a sense of accomplishment, which makes you happy. You are then intrinsically motivated to do it again or try to master it even more. Gamers who successfully graduate from one level to the next feel a sense of competence. This is one of the reasons why well-designed video games are so addictive.

So, events and structures that conduce feelings of competence can enhance enjoyment. They include an optimal level of challenges, positive competence feedback and a lack of demeaning evaluations. In other words, one has to think that they have autonomy to choose whether to engage in the behaviors.

In one classic study that perfectly demonstrates this phenomenon, researchers asked college students to work on a puzzle, but told only half of the students that they would be paid for doing the work. After completing the puzzle and taking a short break, the students were left alone to do whatever they wanted. They could continue to work on another puzzle or do other things available in the lab.

It turned out that the students who were not paid were the ones who voluntarily worked on another puzzle. Another factor that can impact intrinsic motivation is relatedness, which refers to how well one feels connected, secure, respected and cared for. There might be affiliate links on this page, which means we get a small commission of anything you buy. Motivation can be either extrinsic or intrinsic, meaning it can come from outside or inside of a person. Extrinsic motivation comes when you feel the urge to do something in order to gain a specific reward or steer clear of punishment.

An example of this would be working hard on a paper to get a good grade or practicing a sport to win an award. Or maybe you go to work every day just to get that paycheck at the end of the month. Alternatively, intrinsic motivation is when you do something because the process is personally rewarding.

While you don't have a tangible goal in mind, you may just enjoy playing a sport or working on a puzzle.

You simply enjoy doing what you are doing. You may have small victories along the way, but you would be doing whatever you are doing regardless of what you get out of it, simply because you like doing it.

An example of extrinsic motivation is learning a new skill because your company will pay you bonus in addition to your salary. If you want to learn more about the key differences between the two, here's an article about what intrinsic and extrinsic motivation are. For example, if the goals you have come from within and the outcome is able to satisfy your psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, then this is intrinsic motivation, and you found the activity to be both satisfying and enjoyable.

However, if your goals are fixated on the outcome and none of your basic needs are satisfied, then you are more focused on extrinsic motivation to gain money, fame, or power while avoiding any and all consequences.

There are different types of motivation, and as it turns out, understanding why you are motivated to do the things that you do can help you keep yourself motivated -- and can help you motivate others.

In this post, we'll dive into the two types of motivation -- intrinsic and extrinsic -- to learn the differences between the types, the benefits of each, and how to use both types to inspire productivity. Intrinsic motivation involves doing something because it's personally rewarding to you.

24 Intrinsic Motivation Examples That Drive You to Success

Extrinsic motivation involves doing something because you want to earn a reward or avoid punishment. When you're intrinsically motivated, your behavior is motivated by your internal desire to do something for its own sake -- for example, your personal enjoyment of an activity, or your desire to learn a skill because you're eager to learn.

When you're extrinsically motivated, your behavior is motivated by an external factor pushing you to do something in hopes of earning a reward -- or avoiding a less-than-positive outcome. At first glance, it might seem like it's better to be intrinsically motivated than extrinsically motivated. After all, doesn't it sound like it would be ideal if you didn't need anyone -- or anything -- motivating you to accomplish tasks?

But, alas, we don't live in such a motivation-Utopia, and being extrinsically motivated doesn't mean anything bad -- extrinsic motivation is just the nature of being a human being sometimes. If you have a job, and you have to complete a project, you're probably extrinsically motivated -- by your manager's praise or a potential raise or commission -- even if you enjoy the project while you're doing it.

If you're in school, you're extrinsically motivated to learn a foreign language because you're being graded on it -- even if you enjoy practicing and studying it. So, intrinsic motivation is good, and extrinsic motivation is good. The key is to figure out why you -- and your team -- are motivated to do things, and encouraging both types of motivation.

Research has shown that praise can help increase intrinsic motivation. Positive feedback that is "sincere," "promotes autonomy," and "conveys attainable standards" was found to promote intrinsic motivation in children. But on the other side of that coin, external rewards can decrease intrinsic motivation if they're given too willy-nilly. When children received too much praise for completing minimal work or single tasks, their intrinsic motivation decreased.

The odds are, if you're reading this blog post, you're not a child -- although children are welcome subscribers here on the HubSpot Marketing Blog. But the principles of this study are still sound for adults.

If you're a people manager, be intentional with your praise and positive feedback. Make sure that it's specific, empowering, and helps your direct reports understand your expectations and standards.

But make sure you aren't giving too much praise for work that's less meaningful for your team, or they might lose intrinsic motivation. If you're an individual contributor, tell your manager when their feedback is motivating -- give them positive feedback, too.

By providing positive feedback to your manager when they give you praise that keeps you motivated, you, in turn, will extrinsically motivate them to keep managing you successfully.

Meta, huh?Surveys are a great way to get customer feedback in general. Using surveys to generate social proof is an added bonus. Yelp allows customers to include their name and a photograph for their profile. The reviewer, Chelsea, has a photo to validate who she is.

Her picture even shows her eating food at a restaurant. Images like this resonate more with consumers. They can also see that Chelsea has made over 300 reviews on Yelp. People are using their full names and profile pictures to back up their statements. Images like that will have a negative effect on their credibility. Reviews that tell a story can have the same impact.

So, how do you get customers to tell a story. Bonnie reviewed a local pizzeria in Seattle.
